COVERED PATIO BRECKSVILLE, OH 44141 – GENERAL CONTRACTORS CLEVELAND

Today we are excited to add a gorgeous covered patio in Brecksville to our portfolio of completed jobs in Cleveland. This covered porch is approximately 30’ x 18’ with a beautifully vaulted ceiling and wrapped support beams that we built over an existing concrete patio. As you can see, it was the perfect addition to an awesome backyard–equally great for relaxing on hot summer days or enjoying the company of friends and family at night-time. Below we have outlined the major components and phases of this project. (If you’re interested in learning more about JM Design Build or to schedule your design consultation, contact us here).

Before and After Picture of a Covered Patio in Cleveland

PHASE ONE: FRAMING
The first step was to set the 6×6″ treated lumber posts and the beams. Once these were set we were able to begin framing for the “false hip” roof using 2×6 material and the remainder of the roof with 2×10 rafters (the overall pitch of the roof is 12 by 2.5). The final stage of the rough framing was to install 7/16″ OSB roof sheeting.
Total Time: 5 Days

PHASE TWO: ROOFING
Now that the rough framing was completed our roofing team was able to arrive onsite and begin installing the roof. The scope of work for the new roof was as follows:

  • Installed Stormshield Ice and Water guard on all new roof areas
  • Install metal flashing to existing wall of home where we needed to tie in the roof framing
  • Installed white aluminum drip edge
  • Aluminum step flashing
  • Installed black Geocel sealant
  • Installed brown Lomanco roof vent
  • Installed 6 SQ of oakridge Teak shingles in valley black from ABC Supply in Cleveland, OH 44135 to match the existing home

Total Time: 1 Day

PHASE THREE: STONE WORK
The stone used throughout this covered patio in Brecksville was used specifically as a design element to enhance to look and feel of the patio as well as to match the existing outdoor kitchen. It added a little bit to the cost because it is somewhat labor intensive to install the labor correctly (the pitch of the stone caps needed to be just right so that it did not accumulate rain/snow/ice/etc.) but we feel it was a critical element to the finish product.

The stone used is called Bucks County European Castle stone from Mason Structural Steel, Inc. in Walton Hills, OH 44146. The stone pillars were then capped with 19×20 inch Marsh Hearthstones purchased from the same supplier.
Total Time: 4 Days

PHASE FOUR: ELECTRICAL
It was important to the homeowner to have proper lighting throughout the covered porch so that it could be used during the night while relaxing or entertaining guests. As well, we decided to install fans to keep things cool during warm summer days, and made sure the homeowner had sufficient access to electrical outlets by installing them at appropriate locations throughout the covered patio–including two outlets in the wrapped posts themselves. Lastly, we installed one 3-way switch with a dimmer function in the outside (located inside the stone in the far right corner post) and one 3-way switch with a dimmer on the inside of the house next to the sliding door. The Electrical scope of work for the Brecksville covered patio ensued as follows:

  • Acquired electrical permit from the City of Brecksville Building Department
  • Installed two three-way lights with dimmer switches
  • Installed 2 rough fan openings and fans
  • Installed 2 GFCI’s with plate covers
  • Installed 5 recessed can lights in ceiling of porch
  • Hung two exterior lights on the existing brick walls
  • Fixed landscape lighting that the homeowner needed repaired

Total Time: 3 Days

PHASE FIVE: FINISH CARPENTRY AND TRIM WORK
It is at this point in the project that the final product really begins to take shape. For this particular covered patio in Cleveland we worked with the homeowner to select the right type of material to be used on the ceiling and to wrap the posts. The homeowner selected a very nice v-groove wood trim for the ceiling, while electing to use cedar wood (a more durable option) to wrap the posts to be able to handle the various weather elements we are prone to here in Cleveland, OH.
Total Time: 6 Days

PHASE SIX: PAINTING / STAINING
Now that the finish trim had been installed we needed to stain it. The homeowner selected Brick Red Sun Proof acrylic stain from Pittsburgh Paints in Oakwood Village, OH 44146 as the color; which we applied 2 coats of. This was chosen to blend the porch with the existing brick on the home’s exterior.
Total Time: 2 Days

PHASE SEVEN: GUTTERS, SOFFITS
This was the final step! We installed new white gutters and down spouts to match the existing home and properly evacuate water from the new porch.
Total Time: 1 Day
