Covered Deck Broadview Hts

Featured above is what was perhaps the most enjoyable project of the summer in 2011: a massive, 25 x 25 ft covered deck in Broadview Hts, OH which graciously features 2 skylights, 2 ceiling fans, trex accents decking and gorgeous philly fencing used for the interior siding. As you can see from the pictures, the deck looks as though it has always been there–a key component to any such project consisting of a structure that is essentially an extension of the existing home. While this is typically the most crucial component of any home addition, blending in the covered deck on this project was also the most challenging.

In this particular case, we needed to frame for a hip roof (as opposed to a gable roof). While typically not that difficult, we were rather surprised to find that the foundation was not properly squared off when the home was first built over 10 years ago. Therefore we had a gaping 8ft differential between the left and right side of the deck to make up for. Fortunately for us (and the homeowner!) we have some of the most talented and experienced carpenters in the Cleveland area and they were able to pull it off–quite eloquently–by tying the hip into the existing roof using 6×6 foot posts and an 18inch overhang.

In addition to the hip roof, the homeowner received new gutters, soffits and downspouts; a new 18″ x 30″ bathroom window above the porch; and new 30-year dimensional shingles on the entire roof area and rear of the existing garage complete with ridge vent, flashing, and ice and water shield. Our crew also installed 6 new recess lights, 2 ceiling fan openings and 2 switches to control the lighting and fan speed.

The highlight of the covered deck, in our opinion, are the two velux skylights and the v-groove pine trim on the ceiling. Combined, these features allow this happy Broadview Hts homeowner the option of relaxing comfortably in complete solitude, cooking-out with the family, or even hosting parties for special occasions, such as high school graduation parties in the very near future. We’re thrilled about–and a little jealous of–this project and hope to use this particular design as inspiration for more covered decks and patios moving forward.
