Covered Deck and ADA Porch Cleveland
This is a great looking covered deck and ADA porch in Cleveland we recently designed and built as part of a larger in-law suite addition project. The deck is an extension of the kitchen we remodeled and is completely handicap accessible from both the sliding patio door as well as from the sidewalk that leads to the driveway.

Collectively, the covered deck and porch offer a large, fully functional space that is perfect for relaxing and/or entertaining friends and family. In fact, the project was completed just in time to host one of their children’s high school graduation party.
PRODUCTS, SELECTIONS, AND SPECIFICATIONS
After receiving our permit from the Broadview Heights Building department, we ready to begin excavating the backyard and pouring our footings to create a viable foundation for both the in-law suite home addition as well as the covered deck and handicap accessible porch. The trickiest part of the project, of course, was for our residential designers to figure out precisely how to tie into the existing home while creating the right type of roof and pitch so that, to an outsider, it would appear as though the covered deck had always been there. In fact, this ability is truly what sets JM Design Build apart from other general contractors in Cleveland.
Once our remodeling designers produced a compelling design and communicated it with our carpenters, it was time to begin selecting the specific products and materials that would make up the actual look and feel of the space. While certainly not as intricate of a task as helping our customers with cabinet, counter-tops, and tile selections in that of, say, a kitchen remodel–the siding, roofing, and decking materials used are very important and take a certain expertise to get it right. In the case of this particular covered deck in Cleveland, out designers helped with three critical material selections:
- Decking and Railings: The customer opted for an engineered product over a cedar wood because it provides a low-maintenance, great looking final product. After considering a variety of different manufacturers, the customers ultimately felt the most comfortable with Trex Transcend® Porch Flooring & Railing System, in the color Fire Pit. The product, according to Trex’s website, “finishes smooth and virtually gap-free thanks to our tidy floor board profile and our innovative Trex Hideaway® Universal Hidden Fasteners.”
- Shingles: Now that the roof lines tied in perfectly, the customers had a big decision to make: install new shingles to try to match the old, existing ones; or re-shingle the entire home with a new selection. If the shingles weren’t already faded and worn from years of Cleveland weather, we probably would have recommended simply matching the existing shingles on the roof of the covered porch. However, in this case, we are glad the opted to install new shingles on the entire roof using Owens Corning Driftwood 30-year dimensional roof shingle because it provides a very sharp look.
- Siding: Because we had to cut into the existing house to build the home addition, we needed to match the siding on the existing home. Luckily we were able to do so; the siding you see on the new and existing parts of the home is Charter Oak® XL Premium Vinyl Siding (.pdf) in Walnut–which eloquently ties in all the various colors of the exterior home.
Once all of the products had been selected, our team of skilled remodeling contractors were able to begin framing, building, and ultimately finishing the covered deck and ADA compliant patio on the rear of the home. This particular portion of the home addition and renovation project took approximately four weeks from start to finish and the customer’s can often be found enjoying their new covered porch!
